The Candy's up
Thursday, 24 July 2008
The Candy Bar Brighton has announced that Sunday 10th August will be the venue's last night by the seaside. After nearly nine years of providing the scene with a Candy touch - Lucas and Co are saying their farewells.
Reflecting on the decision their press release said, “The whole experience has certainly been interesting. We have entertained a very diverse, discerning and dynamic client base. We have made many wonderful friends and hope you agree that we have helped develop the LGBT community in Brighton on many fronts - providing a flagship venue for women and an invaluable platform for local girl DJ talent, supporting alternative clubs such as Shibby Shabblers, creating the original Women’s disco tent at Brighton Pride and the post Pride Street Party on St James St to name but a few. But unfortunately we can’t say it has not been a hard journey!”
Candy Bar Brighton cited many reasons for their closure including “the difference in the nature of the scene”, “the economic climate”, 2007's non-summer - “no one wants to go to a seaside town in the rain” and the growth of Brighton Pride which has, in the Candy Bar’s eyes lead to “the event growing so big it has swallowed the whole summer season in one weekend!”
However the future for the venue itself looks Pop-tastic as the venue undergoes a refurbishment and moves into the hands of Tommy from London’s Ghetto / Popstarz - retaining some of the Candy Bar's more popular nights ad DJs.
Few clubbers on the Brighton scene over the past nine years won’t have a Candy flavoured memory whether it’s a karaoke style song slaughtering, a mud wrestling adventure, an FTPA session, a Halloween horror or a Rocket-fuelled Friday night. Add to the mix the sheer number of female DJs first given space to learn, be loved and gain recognition by Kim and the girls and the Candy Bar will always have a place in the hearts of many.
Something the Candy Bar wish to recognise. “We would like to take this opportunity to personally thank all the people who have supported Candy Bar Brighton and given us many good times by the seaside. Come celebrate the good times with us at our Official Closing Party on Sunday 10th August from 9pm.”
