A no to Soho from Boris
Mayor's Office cuts Soho Pride funding

A no to Soho from Boris

Friday, 8 August 2008

After five years of generous support, the London Mayor’s office has withdrawn £10,000 from Soho Pride. Adrian Eleftheriou, Soho Pride organiser, has been in discussions with the Mayor’s Office since February 2008 and yet an official response declining Soho Pride’s requests for funding was only received weeks before the event. Soho Pride’s organisers have appealed the decision, writing a letter to the Mayor’s Office highlighting how important the Mayor’s funding is. The withdrawal of funding for the event could prove fatal and mean 2008 could be Soho Pride’s last year on the streets of London.

Whilst Soho Pride greatly appreciates the support they receive from their sponsors they are now faced with the reality of a budget deficit. The only hope they have of overcoming that deficit would be generous donations from the 150,000 Gay Londoners expected to attend Soho Pride.

Soho Pride is urging anybody who can spend a few hours volunteering to collect donations on the day to get in touch and are offering all volunteers a very generous pack of offers and discounts from their Soho Business Sponsors. For more information on volunteering, donating or on the event itself please visit www.sohopride.net

A spokesperson from the Mayor of London's Press Office send REALSoho this response to the article above:

'It is not possible to support every event in London and we have been very clear that a review of all events is underway. The GLA will continue to support the annual Pride celebrations, which have a very significant focus in Soho, thus also having an impact on local businesses, including gay owned ones.

'The gay community - and gay businesses - of course make a huge contribution to the life and economy of London, but in this case the priority has to be trying to tackle the terrible, potentially tragic, consequences of homophobic bullying, over a commercially led matter.

'What we will continue to do is ensure that the Pride celebrations can thrive and that London remains at the forefront of gay issues.'
